President Honoring US Forces Killed In Afghan Attack

President Barack Obama is privately honoring the U.S. forces killed in the costliest attack of the Afghanistan war.

The president is at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where fallen troops come home. His trip was unannounced in a measure of security.

A total of 30 Americans and eight Afghans were killed Saturday when their helicopter was shot down by a Taliban insurgent using a rocket-propelled grenade.

No media coverage of the proceedings was to be permitted, on order of the military.

Previous Story

The Pentagon says the remains of the 30 U.S. troops killed in the Afghanistan helicopter shootdown over the weekend will be brought to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Tuesday, including the remains of a Navy SEAL from Jacksonville.

Pentagon officials say there will be no public media coverage of the military's "dignified transfer" ceremony because the remains are still being identified. Families are allowed to attend the arrival.

Larry and Diane Campbell, of Jacksonville, say their son Chris, 36, was killed when the chopper was shot down. He joined the Navy after graduating from White Oak High School in 1993. Campbell was a member of SEAL Team Six.

The 18-year ban on media coverage of the returns was lifted in 2009 by then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates, leaving the decision to the families of the war dead.

The man will do anything for a photo op, and as for his vacation, lets see, "how many average americans can go to Marthas Vinyard for a 10 day vaction?" Let him stay up there, he's worthless at his job.

I agree with Sarah, the man just can't win. If he din't say anything you people would be up in arms about how he hate 'MURICA, and he's not a PATRIOT and doesn't care about the soldiers and their families. And if he does do something he's wasting tax-payers money and it's a publiciaty stunt.

It cracks me up, people are mad if he doesn't go and people are mad if he does go. Obviously Obama can't just hang around military bases, and show up everytime someone dies. I'm sure he would want to be there every chance he gets. Doesn't matter if you are for or against him, be realistic, he can not show up for every death of every person in the military that dies. And to the person who complained about him vacationing, lets not forget how many times GWB spent on vacation.

As a close friend of Chris Campbell, I'm quite disgusted to read the comments that have been posted. These articles are not about our President. They are about these men, especially my dear friend, who lost their lives for our freedom. Instead of ridiculing our President, how about a sincere "thank you" for these men. I know their family & friends who are devastated would appreciate it that more than complaints.

Nothing but a photo op, its election time, any other time, he would have gone on vacation. Never let a crisis go to waste.

These military members that just gave their lives and made the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE are the very ones that the President & Congress were threatening not to pay this month. Now he wants to honor them? I call that being a hypocrite. If Obama was truly honoring these men he would have done it privately without it being leaked to the media, using this tragedy for press coverage shows he was not doing it for the right reason. 30 lost, 30 pairs of boots lined up with rifles, dog tags and helmets, 30 families grieving, 30 souls who gave all! No, he is not well liked by the military, it is time to let the military do their job!

I just read the nausea inducing story on cnn.com of the 10 year old who is wondering why his so-called "hero" father was not remembered with the other rubes killed in the attack. The 10 year old's "hero" was the pilot of the aircraft that was supposedly shot down on Saturday. The photo on the webpage reminds me of photos of the Hitler Youth. Notice that father and son, dressed in the same uniform, look like they are in a church. I guess the supposed "god' is on our side, right? This story seems to be very well orchestrated publicity stunt.

Aww ain't that sweet. It takes losing 30 Americans for him to show up for something. What about the other troops lost every day? Why doesn't he show up at Dover for them? Bc he's too busy vacationing on OUR dime.

FYI, This is not the first time President Obama payed respect to fallen soldiers, something you should learn to do.
