Released Inmate Gets Lost In New Jail, Calls 911 To Get Out

A woman who just got out of jail in Onslow County found herself right back there when she got lost in the new one being built beside it.

A report from the Onslow County Sheriffs Office says Michelle Sanchez was released from the jail early Thursday morning- she was supposed to meet her ride at the magistrates office-- but she went to the new one, not the old one that's still being used.

The county says a contractor was there working late the night before and left a door open. Sanchez went in the door and deputies say she wandered through the building so much that she got lost. She eventually found a phone and called 911. Moments later deputies found her using the camera system in the building.

The county says they've reminded contractors to keep doors locked when they are not in use.

The county manager says this incident was just a fluke with Sanchez getting lost and a contractor there working late at night.
