Hundreds Enjoy Pitt County Special Olympics

Hundreds turned out for the Pitt County Special Olympics Spring Games at J.H. Rose High School Wednesday.

360 athletes registered top compete in the games. 675 volunteers were on hand to help.

The Spring Games allows athletes who have intellectual disabilities to compete in teams, or individually.

Athletes from across Pitt County competed in Track and Field Events.

Events included the 50, 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes, softball throw, standing long jump, wheelchair race and a race specifically for the visually impaired.

Athletes from ages 7 and above receive a chance to engage in friendly competition and display their skills, all while having some fun.

The youth games area featured fun games and activities that athletes ages 2 through 7 can enjoy.

The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide annual sports training and athletic competition through various Olympic-type sports for children and adults who are intellectually disabled.
