Principal Suspended Amid Testing Probe

A local high school principal has been suspended as an investigation into testing procedures continues.

Edgecombe County Schools says Southwest Edgecombe High School Principal John Westberg has been placed on suspension with pay while a probe into inappropriate testing procedures is going on.

One Southwest Edgecombe teacher has resigned and a testing coordinator was suspended for ten days without pay as a result of the investigation, according to a news release.

Officials have not revealed what the specific allegations of wrongdoing are.

Westberg has been principal there since July 2009. He began his career in education in 1979 as a physical education teacher and coach.

SouthWest Edgecombe High School is located near Pinetops and serves approximately 950 students in grades 9-12.

Teacher, It sounds as if you are one of those people who live in the past instead of the present. It was past time for change in Edgecombe County Schools, especially SWE. You should look in the mirror and decide if you are here for the betterment of education of our students or if you are the problem. Mr. Westberg's tenure thus far at SWE has resulted in positive changes at SWE. You are the reason negativity breeds so rampant amongst the staff. Try to look within and change your attitude and see how you can make things better by improving your own performance.

Joe, how would you know that's the reason why they got rid of him at WHS? You pretty much have the whole story wrong. And destroyed? meaning raising test scores, a cleaner school, creating a safer environment, finding BETTER teachers, not putting up with pitty me stuff. Has helped athletics! Adding new courses to offer, yeah he sure did destroy it, I could keep going. Again you are probably a sorry teacher if you are one, and can't do your job right. He goes by the book. The past has NOTHING to do with the situation now. Witherspoon new exactly who he was hiring and he had a purpose and that was to make SWE better, for the last year in a half I think he has pretty much done his job. Get a grip. You can't find anything else so you "try" to state facts that you have no idea what you're talking about. It's time to change that if you like it or not. Change needs to be made not here but everywhere else in NC.

Part 1: Dear Joe, I do not think you realize how big of a fool you are making yourself look! John Westberg is an amazing principal, if we should question anybody capabilites of the job it would be the last idiot that called himself a principal at that school. The former principal of that school sat in his office all day and passed work off to anybody but himself! If you were to take a stroll down the halls of SWEHS you would see that Mr. Westberg is OUT PATROLING the hallways! For your accusations 1-3 please take the time to go to any high school and realize the same thing is happening, it can't be stopped but it has been cut down! Besides, its about time that we got a principal in that school that will make some of these "home grown" teachers abide by the rules! Maybe this incompetent superintendent of ours should realize that some of these teachers need to go, with their extremely inappropriate comments they make to students along with the way some degrade the students!

Look at the two previous high schools he was at. He destroyed them. He was ousted at both of those.

WITN you are going to have a bigger story to broadcast. Especailly when this "investigation" is done, what evidence is ECPS going to find? NOTHING, and I'm sure they will try to find something so they don't look stupid on their part, sorry but you made a big mistake by putting this in the media. Prepare for a huge embarrassment .

Joe in Pinetops, Are you crazy?! 1. Mr. Westberg is in the hallways and cafeteria WAY more than the last principal. 2. There have been fewer fights in SouthWest since Westberg has been there. 3. Westberg has let the teachers decide if students can listen to music in their classroom. Not ALL teachers do and the ones that do, do so at appropriate times, not all the time. 4. I didn't see anything in this article except that Westberg helped to modify a schedule and that he was granted a MEDICAL leave of absence. Now, I can say for certain that not all teachers who were present at summer school were interviewed as this article/these comments are making it seem. Also, it seems as though the only question being asked consistently is, "What are your complaints?" This sounds more like a witch hunt than an investigation. Maybe the people that are used to running everything because they are from the area or know everyone's family should take a step back and look at the improvement.

Joe, you obviously are 1.part of the select "get rid of Westberg" group from SWE or 2. a typical uninformed individual who hears pieces of information and exploits it through as many media blogs as possible. Reccomendation: Find out the FACTS about the actions of students at SWE. A retraction will need to be written, because 1-4 are untruths. Your accusation of number 5 is a recent event that has not been public knowledge except to those "select" individuals. Don't you find this charge a bit peculiar enlight of this recent investigation? Even more peculiar is you knowing about it. Hmmmmmm

Joe, obviously you are not aware of what had been going on at that school before Westberg arrived. Everything you named was going on ten-fold. It is a so much better place now. But keep dreaming. you are probably one of the parents that lost your status when someone new arrived and treated everybody the same.
