Power has been restored to most of the 2,000 people who lost electricity in the Chocowinity area of Beaufort County, according to Progress Energy.
The power outage started at 7:22 a.m. Friday, according to the energy company. A spokesman said a pole split at the top, causing the outage. The company is investigating whether the pole may have been struck by lightning recently but didn't fully split until this morning.
The northernmost point of the outage was just north of the bridge over Pamlico River in Washington, south to near Hackney along Highway 17. The outage also extended east nearly to Blounts Creek.
Power was restored to most customers around 10:00 a.m.
