Pitt Sheriff: Drug Cases With Older Residents Are Increasing

Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks says the number of older adults getting busted for drugs - some being prescription pain medications - has increased.

Elks says the cases involving people ages 50 and above has increased. He says the number of older adults getting busted for drugs rose to 6 percent of all cases in 2011, up from 5 percent in 2010.

Elks says the drug busts don't only involve illegal drugs, but also the illegal sale of prescription drugs. The sheriff says some are trying to make some extra money during tough times.

Sheriff Elks says the Pitt County Sheriff's Office has a prescription pill drop box at the sheriff's office for people to safely dispose of their prescriptions. He says in 2011, 356 pounds of pills were dropped there.

There is a lot of Obama bashing on this site, and some of it well deserved. However, it was the Bush(W) administration that made this mess by pushing the prescription drug "benefit" through the medicare system. Republican AND Democrat politicians, in bed with, and on the take from Big Pharma, gave millions of seniors (and the fake disabled) this junk at taxpayers expense. Most of them do not actually need the meds, and promptly sell them to the growing ranks of pill-heads. I am not a pill user in any way, but I know when they arrive each month because the street level "activity" booms for several days. It's like a second round of welfare checks has arrived. Even the grocery store is packed with people flush with dope cash. Here's how it works in the USA now...Government extorts tax money, gives it to giant corporate drug-pushers, who, with the complicity of the medical profession, makes sure lawlessness prevails in your community. It's a carbon copy of how the section-8 housing system works (and other programs). It's only going to get worse under obummercare. Wait and see.

this just goes to show what state our economy is in that older people sometimes need to sell their meds just to eat!

It is time to decriminalize drugs. Stop the "Drug War". The war on drugs is what created gangs such as Crips & Bloods. This so-called war does nothing to stem the use and sale of drugs.

I think that this is a very sad situation. When some people get desperate for money, they will break the law. Some of these folks have never been in trouble with the law and are trying to survive. I am not condoning this, I think it is sad that they are that desperate!

Opiates are the gateway to heroin, prescription pills are a serious threat. The culprit is Big Pharma.

Your ALL wrong. Think about it, they have to choose between taking life saving medication and eating on the little funds they have. THANKS OBAMA. This is a way to actually EAT AND TAKE THEIR LIFE SAVING PRESCRIBED MEDS. Wake up America!! Have you all been living under rocks?!

You must be living under a rock if you think this started under Obama. People were broke WAY before he took office.

one might also want to consider that doctors are eager to prescribe these pills to the older supposedly more intelligent citizens and also with the cost of living rising but the pay not increasing it's a quick buck to help with income.....just saying and NO, I'm not saying it's okay! More people need to deal with their life choices, live within their means, use morals and endure life just like most of us already do....just saying!
