Pitt County School District To Require Moment Of Silence

Pitt County schools will be a little more quiet this fall, at least for a moment or two every day.

The Daily Reflector of Greenville reports the county school board voted Monday to require a daily moment of silence for all schools starting with the coming school year.

Board member Worth Forbes first proposed the idea in January. He says students will benefit from the time for silent reflection.

The school board voted 6-4 to approve the policy. Members of the board who voted against the proposal say they would prefer the moment of silence to be optional rather than mandatory.

Previous Story:

Each morning in Pitt County schools could soon begin with a moment of silence. The Pitt County Board of Education is considering the measure and will have its first reading of the policy Monday.

The draft says the moment of silence would foster an environment conducive to learning. Students start the day with focus, and teachers cannot advise kids on what to think about during that time. If a student asks if they should use the moment of silence to pray, the draft of the policy says the teacher should respond that the student may decide on their own how to use that time.
