Pitt County Marks Walks To School Day

Wednesday was international walk to school day and a big group celebrated at A.G. Cox Middle School in Winterville.

Law enforcement and volunteers from Safe Kids Pitt County and the Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program at Pitt County Memorial Hospital were on hand to discuss pedestrian safety with the middle schoolers. There was also music and refreshments.

Organizers say the school was chosen for the event because of high traffic congestion there in the afternoon. Students were given informative handouts about how to walk safely.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among children ages 3 to 14 worldwide.

When you see how many staff and students in Pitt Co are obese, it is about time that more start walking and biking to school EVERYDAY. I am glad to hear at least one school is starting it for one day with the students...maybe the staff will learn something.
