Pitt County Named To List Of "Best For Young People"

Pitt County has been named to the list of the "100 Best Communities For Young People."

America's Promise Alliance included Pitt County in the 2011 list because of its 25 percent decrease in the dropout rate. The rankings were based on how communities addressed dropout rates and prepared youth for college.

Two years ago, Pitt County launched a program to reduce the local dropout rate by 50 percent. So far, it is halfway to its goal.

To all those disparaging Pitt County as offering nothing to younger residents except gang memberships and bar-hopping, please remember that if you ever move to a city with real crime problems...and higher taxes, higher cost of living, gridlock traffic, no culture of southern hospitality, and no proximity to the beach. Stop whining about crime and re-take/rebuild your community - the police can NOT do it alone. Downtown Greenville has become a disgrace - boarded up businesses - REALLY? It drives away descent, fun-loving students, replacing them with "collegiate" thugs.

After having read all the comments as of this posting, it seems to me the readers do not agree with the advertising agency conducting the survey ! I would guess that the young folks in this area know better and as one of them said "...can't wait until I can leave .." Probably one of the wisest moves that person will make. Go west young man (or woman),go West .

Yea it is if you would like for your kid to get strung out on drugs & become an alcoholic...yea Pitt has alot of bars, clubs for them to hang out oh and dont forget the drug problem..there are to many kids i know that has gotten strung out on pills after moving here for college it's like getting candy off the street...Lets give thanks to the doctors who give out all the adderall (for the ones who have to study so hard)& pain pills for a simple ache when they could actually be taken something OTC..yes I live in Pitt Co. and have all my life...Don't have a problem with the county but there is a big problem with drugs as with any other county.

Congrats to the public school system for lowering standards so much that almost anyone can gradiate, but not read, write or cipher even at 18-20 years of age - things 7th graders used to be able to do. A college degree is the new HS diploma.

You've got to be kidding me! This area has nothing to offer for 'young people' to do except for bars and clubs! If this place made the list, I'd be shocked to see what others areas have to offer that didn't make the list...

Guess the survey people haven't seen the Greenville news. Murder, rape, shooting, robbing, drugs are the #1 pastime in Greenville
