Pitt County Baby Drowns In Backyard Pool

A Pitt County family is mourning the loss of its baby boy after officials say he managed to climb into the family's backyard pool.

Officials say the 9-month-old boy died at the Farmville home located on the 2700 block of Stonybrook Drive. An obituary identified the baby as Kolton Moore.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says the family's 3-year-old found his brother in the above-ground pool Friday. The baby crawled up six steps unnoticed while his father worked in the yard.

The family has since removed the swimming pool from their backyard, which is fenced. No charges are expected to be filed.

The child was buried Tuesday afternoon.

All I can say is that I know this family personally and it is easy to say, "take the ladder out" when you have NO clue what happened, no one does, the family doesn't even know how this happened.... the "six steps" to the pool was NOT a ladder, so don't just assume that. This family is DEVASTATED that they have lost their beautiful little boy and this truly was one of those situations where precautions had been taken with this pool and it was just a tragic accident. There are people that do not deserve to have a child that abandon, neglect and hurt their children and they are just "lucky" that nothing happens to their kids like this. This family LOVED this little boy, cherished him and took great care of him and it royally SUCKS that this happened to them.

We had a 3 foot above ground pool with a ladder for a few summers. Even though my kids were older I ALWAYS made them take the ladder out every time they got out for the day. We had small kids in the neighborhood and I was always afraid they would somehow get into the fenced backyard. TAKE THE LADDER OUT EACH TIME. It is worth the peace of mind.
