Just 2 days after deputies say a man was stabbed by his wife in their home near Ayden, the husband spoke out to WITN supporting her.

Louis Avery showed us the staples in the stab wound in his back. Avery says he had surgery Wednesday morning, and is staying with his father at his home on Highway 43 in Pitt County while he heals.

His wife, Sandra Avery, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, but her husband says she has mental problems stemming from when she fell off the roof of their home back in January when she was helping to paint the house.

He described the stabbing incident, saying he was in the kitchen when she came up behind him.

"When I turned around and went to walk I knew that I'd been stabbed. I seen the knife in her hand, and her eyes were real big, and she was out of it just like she hadn't realized what she had done. She was in another world," said Louis Avery.

Avery says he's been trying to get his wife help ever since the fall, saying she goes into blackout spells when she doesn't take her medication.
