Just one week after Pitt County's superintendent announced she'll be taking a job in Winston-Salem, the Pitt County school board met Friday night to discuss the process of finding her replacement.
Dr. Beverly Emory was not in attendance, nor was chair of the board Marc Wichard. The Board of Education tells us Wichard has abstained from the search and hiring process but could not confirm the reason. The board chose to hire the North Carolina School Boards Association for $14,500 to help in the search, and plan to advertise the vacancy starting on Monday. Allison Schafer with the School Boards Association gave a presentation about the process and spoke with us after.
"We do not screen the candidates or suggest who they should hire, we just provide information that allows them to know who the candidates are, try to get good background check information, and we also try to get as many good candidates as possible," said Schafer
The board voted on a deadline for anyone interested to apply as Monday May 20th. The unofficial target date for the new superintendent to begin is August 15th.
