GREENVILLE, N.C. – After enjoying its first off day of camp Tuesday, East Carolina returned to the Cliff Moore Practice Complex Wednesday morning with a three-hour workout in shells. The Pirates continued preparations for Saturday’s second intra-squad scrimmage of camp.
"Practice went well," head coach Ruffin McNeill said. "The day off helped. There was a lot of enthusiasm, which came from the guys’ chance to get their legs under them again. I was pleased with how the coaches and players went about their business today. Execution was very well done on all sides of the football."
Sticking with the staff's plan of getting in a lot of team work this week to continue evaluating personnel, more than an hour of the practice was conducted in skeleton drills, against early-designated scouts or in team-on-team.
After going through basic drills and routes at the beginning of the workout, the offense spent periods against scouts working on screens, inside releases and with wide receivers going one-on-one against defensive backs. The staff also dedicated 20 minutes to special teams. The final 30 minutes of practice were team-on-team.
McNeill added the focus of workouts would not change, despite being 17 days away from the season opener against South Carolina.
"It was not about who we play," McNeill said. "It’s about what we do and how we do it. It’ll continue to be that way through the bowl game."
ECU will conduct its final two-a-day of fall camp Thursday with a morning and afternoon workout and return to the single-practice schedule Friday.
McNeill announced the additions of DB Doug Mayo-Tapp and DE Ryan Mahoney to the 105-man roster … Mayo-Tapp replaces DB Desmond Lawrence, who left the team to focus on his Pirate track career, and Mahoney replaces OL Kenneth Freeman, who is out indefinitely with a knee injury.
Thursday’s Practice Times: 8:45 – 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.
Season Opener: Sept. 3 vs. South Carolina in Charlotte (7:00 p.m.)
