NEW INFO: Pigeon Knocks Out Power In New Bern

A pigeon is responsible for a sizable power outage Tuesday afternoon in New Bern.

A city spokeswoman says the pigeon flew into a main feeder line, shorting it out. The pigeon died.

At the height of the outage, some 1600 customers were in the dark, from downtown to across the Trent River into James City. Most of those customers were restored within an hour, except for about 160 customers on Middle Street, Hancock Street and Walt Bellamy which got power back on this evening.

the 1600 customers should not have to pay for time there power was lost and the pidgeons family should be responsible to pay for repairs

The last time I checked, if your electricity is out.. you can't use it. That automatically means that it isn't costing you. Duh.

Don't laugh, I can see laws being drawn up now saying that electric lines endanger birds and are no longer allowed.

This is an excellent example of how fragile out power grid is. There must be a better way. Yes it will most likely cost more but if a little pigeon can cause this much trouble just imagine......
