Perdue Declares Small Business Saturday In NC

North Carolina's small businesses are getting a day in the spotlight.

Gov. Beverly Perdue has declared Saturday as "Small Business Saturday" in the state.

A statement from the state Department of Commerce says there were an estimated 734,000 small businesses in North Carolina in 2005. It says there were 182,950 employer businesses and 98 percent of those had fewer than 500 employees.

The department said businesses with fewer than 50 employees in 85 rural counties created 26,760 new jobs and added $2.3 billion to their payrolls between 1998 and 2002.

Thought I heard this was an American Express idea, not an original idea from Bev. Story was on the Today show on Thursday morning. Interesting...

Bev does not know one darn thing about small business. She will put over 500 small businesses out of business this Tues. The sweepstakes ban takes place on the 1st.

Well I usually keep at least one employee, but for the past year have had none. I paid $ 10/hr and trained on the job, usually from scratch. With unemployment insurance, social security, taxes, and not knowing what else is coming from DC... I will not hire anyone right now. The equivalent cost is more like $ 12/hr. Bev's so called "small business Saturday" did nothing for me. Heck I read the news everyday and heard nothing about it until now.

Excellent timing, right after Black Friday! Great thinking don't know what NC would do without her!

Wow, and so important that we garnered a mention out of the side of the Governor's mouth on the day of the "event", but not a peep in the days before? That really sounds like a heartfelt and meaningful appreciation for a vital part of our economy to me. These patronizing statements amount to the equivalent of a pat on the back and an insincere "don't worry, I'll handle it". It is borderline insulting and really illustrates the disconnect the politicians have with the reality of the world in which we all live. Thanks Bev, hope we didn't hold up your lunch at the private club.
