POLICE: Eastern Carolina Inmate Steals UNC Police Car

Authorities say an inmate from an Eastern Carolina prison stole a police car and led authorities on a chase into two counties today.

The inmate, Farley Bernard, was being kept at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City. Department of Correction spokesman Keith Acree tells WITN News that Bernard was taken to UNC Hospitals for a medical appointment and managed to get away. A UNC police officer confronted the escapee outside and tasered Bernard.

Acree says somehow the inmate managed to get the officers police car and a chase began. It ended up on I-40 West and the police car eventually crashed in Alamance County.

Records show the 46-year-old was convicted in 2007 kidnapping, speeding to elude arrest and other charges. Acree said those charges stemmed from a 2006 carjacking in Wake County.

State troopers say Bernard was being taken to the Orange County jail.
