PGV Airport Gets Makeover

If you're getting ready travel this holiday season, there will be millions joining you. AAA, expects 92.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holidays, an increase of 3.1% from the 89.5 million who traveled a year ago. If you're leaving from one airport in the east, you'll be surprised by the changes.

The new facilities include an upstairs departure area, two gates instead of one and a new waiting room that resembles more of an top-notch hotel lobby than an airport. Some have air-rests with plugs to charge cell-phones and your laptop. There's also an larger sercuity area to accommodate the growing number of travelers coming through the Pitt Greenville Airport.

"We grew at 11% when most airports were down, more and more people are utilizing our services we saw that expansion and we saw we needed to add that extra room in the departure landing and set ourselves up so second airline could roll on up here and have the facilities," Said airport manager Jerry Vickers.

The new terminal opened on December 15th.

I think this is great that they improved the airport, but...flights are still late, and as a business traveler out of this airport since 1993, I have had to resort going to RDU to make sure I make my connection. I love the folks at the PGV airport, agents, and TSA folks, but if the better connection for me from here is delayed making me miss the last flight to my final destination, I have no choice. The other thing is they need another airline or offer connections to PHL or another city other than CLT. US Airways Express is an outsourced firm, and I have found that the corporate really doesn't care about on time departure/arrival of these flights. Sad, since they were the ones happy about dereg and the Hub/Spoke concept. Fewer seats if you miss connections regardless of your status with them. Maybe the airport authority will push for other airlines and/or other destinations in addition to the CLT connection. That would be a plus for the area!
