PERDUE: Craven, Onslow & Pitt To Lose $18M In School Funds

Governor Beverly Perdue says three school systems here in the East would take major budget cuts under the proposed Senate budget.

The Governor's Office Wednesday released figures compiled by the State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction. Early analysis shows that Craven, Onslow and Pitt counties would have to cut $18 million. The Governor's Office says those cuts would force the counties to lay off teachers, assistants and administrators.

Both Onslow and Pitt counties would face $6.8 million in cuts, according to the news release, while Craven County would be cut $4.3 million next year in state school funding.

The Senate gave tentative approval to a spending plan for next year that Democrats claim will harm public education and health care programs for the poor.

The GOP-controlled chamber voted Wednesday along party lines in favor of a two-year budget that spends nearly $20 billion for the year starting July 1.

It is very obvious by some of the igonorant statements posted, that many individuals have never worked in the school system when they are saying to make cuts to schools or asking why schools need money to educate children. If you worked in the school system you would know how much money it costs to meet the needs of ALL students and all the resources that are needed to help our students be globally competitive. I can only hope that you realize the importance of educating our children before they suffer the budget cuts and are not given the education they deserve and need to be successful. Tell a teacher who buys school supplies for their students who come to school without, that schools are getting too much money. I have not met a teacher yet who does not use their salary to purchase snacks, supplies, etc. for students. I really have a tough time believing that an educated individual would feel that school budget should be cut and that our children should go through school without the newest technology and resources that they need to be competitive. Please, if you have higher education and are a parent and feel that school budgets should be cut-please post. I want to understand your thought process.

This is the problem when you continuously add bloat to government funding. When it ultimately is time to cut everyone compains "well we cant cut schools, or roads, or prisons...." All of those people are WRONG!! Schools are the vast majority of the budget so there is no way to get your financial house in order without cuts. Anyone who is a decent parent knows that giving your kids unlimited money is a bad idea and responsibility and quality are much better when it comes to money. But when people talk about the school system responsibility and quality mean nothing and throwing more and more money at it will solve all problems. Completely contradictory to reality.

They cut teachers, assistants, and administrators, but yet refuse to cut the number of positions of these overpaid and lazy school board members in what should be at least half. Pitt County (12 members) has more school board members than the cities of Boston (7) and Los Angeles(9). What a joke of a school system and school superintendent Pitt County has. She should be the one to be fired for playing dirty politics that has led to where my wife has her job STOLEN FROM HER. SHE EARNED IT AND NOW IT'S STOLEN FROM HER. What a crock of $h!t this has turned out to be. The governor stealing money out of the education lottery fund for her own luxury vacations has costed people their jobs and some of them their homes. Luckily, I'm doing well to help bring money to keep us going but WE HAVE TO CUT BACK CAUSE OF OTHER PEOPLE'S GREED AND STUPIDITY ON HOW TO RUN A GOVERNMENT. Clean house and get rid of these crooks.

Cut Education equals more prisons, more drug use, more robbery, more killing, this is why the USA will be a 2nd hand country.

how can you have any confidence in her leadership with anything. Example , yesterday she flew in her private jet to washington for a meeting on hurricane prepardness. We have not had a major hurricane since 1999 floyd. But the state is getting torn apart now with tornadoes. So we have a meeting on hurricanes. Just stop the stupidity governor.

Why should our children have to suffer for the irresponsibility of a government that does seem to care for the residents? The government in this state has ruined the finances and we are supposed to keep paying for it?!? I think NOT!!

well the problem with the lottery money is that at first it sounded great but after the laws are rewritten now most of the money goes to capital needs. I school systems have been done wrong and meanwhile our citizens spends millions of hard work dollars trying to win a few dollars. Really sad that we pay taxes and then people play lottery and just keep giving to the state.
