The North Carolina Highway Patrol issued more than 5,300 traffic and criminal citations during it's week long Operation Stop Arm campaign which wrapped up Friday. It focused on promoting traffic safety around schools, school buses, and school bus stops.

Troopers followed more than 671 school buses across the state and issued 5,362 traffic and criminal violations. 18 citations were given to drivers who failed to stop for a school bus, 66 for child safety seat violations, 583 for seatbelt violations and 2,587 for speeding.

Since January of this year, five children have lost their lives in North Carolina as they approached or left the school bus stop.

Despite the end of the campaign, troopers say they will continue to monitor school buses and school zones.
