Onslow County Jail Can't Open Yet

Deputies can move into offices at the new Onslow County Justice Complex, but the inmates will have to wait.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported that a temporary certificate of occupancy allows the sheriff's office employees to move into the first two floors of the five-story, $57 million building beginning Monday.

State and city regulators aren't allowing anyone to move into the jail on the top three floors because the building's smoke evacuation system wasn't installed as designed. The system will remove smoke in case of a fire.

The jail was scheduled to open July 1.

The 528-bed jail will allow the sheriff's office to bring back about 50 inmates being held at the Sampson County Jail at a cost of around $80,000 a year.
