Pitt county deputies pull over a man wanted for not paying child support, but then he attempts to run them over.
According to the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office deputies went looking for Joseph Highsmith Jr. Friday night after they received a tip he was riding in a car near East Tenth Street and River Bluff Drive.
Highsmith was wanted for not paying child support for the past year.
Officials say Highsmith was in the passenger seat of the vehicle when they pulled him over. They say Highsmith then reached over, put the vehicle in drive and hit the gas, attempting to run the detectives over.
Highsmith was injured, but the detectives were not.
Highsmith is charged with two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official, four counts of Resisting a Public Officer, one count of Driving while License is Revoked, and several other charges. His bond is set at $407,085.80.
