According to officials there have been 15 fires in Onslow county within the past week and officials believe half of those fires have been the work of an arsonist.
The latest fire began Saturday afternoon when firefighters received a call that a large brush fire was burning in the area of Chadwick Acres in Sneads Ferry.
Several residents had to be evacuated from their homes while crews fought the fire by air and ground. Around 12 hours later crews were able to contain the fire and residents were allowed back in.
According to officials 60 acres have burned in the fire so far. Officials say they are investigating to figure out who the arsonist is.
Officials say the fire at Chadwick Acres is expected to continue to smolder for the next few weeks and heavy smoke could remain in the area.
