ONE YEAR LATER: Police Believe Woman Committed Suicide

It's been one year since a local woman was last seen alive, and now police investigating her death feel she committed suicide.

Aimee Pitt of Tarboro was last seen December 30th, 2010. For weeks her family and friends searched Edgecombe County looking the 22-year-old woman, who was ultimately found hanging in a closet in her home on January 19th.

Tarboro police say they are still waiting on evidence found in the closet to come back from the SBI lab for DNA testing, but they feel Pitt's death was a suicide. Lt. Keith Hale tells WITN News they don't believe those test results will change the outcome of their investigation.

When asked why it took them three weeks to find her body in the closet, Hale explained Pitt's boyfriend, Ben Harrelson, reported the woman missing on January 3rd. On January 7th he said police were given consent to do a "walk through" of their home, meaning they were allowed to walk through the common areas of the home and if they spotted anything suspicious they were allowed to look further. Nothing suspicious was seen, according to Hale.

The lieutenant says after exhausting all leads, they decided to do a more detailed search of her home on January 19th and that's when they found her body in the closet.

In January, the Medical Examiner said the woman died from hanging and in June her autopsy said there were traces of cocaine and ethanol in her system.

Hale says Harrelson is no longer a person of interest in the case. A day after Pitt was reported missing, Harrelson was involved in a high speed crash on Highway 258 near Scotland Neck. The man spent two weeks in the hospital and a social media profile says Harrelson now lives in Virginia.
