OFFICIALS: Businesses Evacuated After Car Hits Gas Meter

Officials said a car hit a gas meter on Monday morning, causing a gas leak.

Fire Marshal Danny Hill said it happened near the Piggly Wiggly grocery store on Tatum Drive in New Bern just before 7 a.m.

Hill said local businesses were evacuated and closed.

Hill said the gas company was able to shut off the leak around 8:45 a.m. and get it under control.

No word yet on any injuries or charges from the initial car wreck which officials say caused the leak.

Hill said most businesses in the area were reopened by 9 a.m.
