Governor Sends Letter To Big East Supporting ECU

Governor Beverly Perdue has sent a letter in support of ECU’s bid to join the Big East Conference. The letter to the presidents of the Big East schools is co-signed by Senator Kay Hagan and Senator Richard Burr.

Here is what is in the body of that letter:

Re: East Carolina University - Interest in the Big East Conference

Ladies and Gentlemen:

We are writing as three state-wide North Carolina elected officials - its Governor and its two United States Senators - and in support of the effort of East Carolina University ("ECU") to become a member of the Big East Conference. In this effort, we speak - along with a majority of North Carolinians - with one voice.

Our state has a strong tradition of public universities with both excellent academic records and deep commitments to intercollegiate athletics. ECU, as fully described in the letter from University of North Carolina system President Tom Ross, follows in that tradition.

ECU is an institution whose presence would serve to strengthen the Big East as a conference by bringing its deep ties to the entire state of North Carolina into the Big East fold. ECU, by virtue of its growing academic reach, its proven track record in football and other intercollegiate sports, and its ardent fan base throughout North Carolina, is a school that can and will serve the Big East well.

We would very much appreciate your serious consideration of East Carolina University.

I was hoping ECU would join the Big East so I could see Pirate football in Cincinati again..but after being snubbed by big east, ECU should tell them to take a hike if they come calling and stay in CUSA.

I want an AQ...Not that we treatern to win it for a few years but it helps get the athletes in the door. But BE will be very hard pressed to keep theirs and the BCS doesnt seem to be big on sympathy so theres no hope there! ACC is what makes sense and since ACC makes sense College rules clearly state that we thus cant go there either! ECU is Screwed unless SEC (hahahaha) calls.

I've never been a fan of Beverly Perdue and her weird ideas she has come up with, but she is doing the right thing for not only East Carolina University, but for the economy of Eastern North Carolina, especially Greenville. East Carolina University has certainly proven more than schools like Air Force, Navy, Central Florida, and especially SMU. ECU has been stuck in the dog house for a long time. To even think SMU would be invited over ECU is just asinine and makes me want to throw up.

With mt west and con usa merging in the next year or so we need to stay in conference and give coach Lebo a few years to make our basketball program relevent. Then the bigger conferences will come calling!

I don't know if the Big East is the right situation or not, depending on these other schools, but when it comes down to more money and not having as much travel expenses, ECU would be way better for the Big East than SMU. This Big East Commissioner should be fired for ever sending them the invitation instead of ECU. I will keep on raising a temper and being a jerk to the Big East fans until ECU gets their chance at an AQ that they deserved since the 90's, and especially back in 2005. NC is the 10th largest state and is in the middle of the East Coast. There are no Big East schools in NC. How much more stupid could the Big East commissioner be?

The time to get ECU into a better conference was when they added Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC. Perdue could have made it clear that without adding ECU, the NC schools wouldn't support any additions, just like VA's governor did to get Va Tech into the ACC.
