No. 9 North Carolina used a couple of big innings to claim its seventh straight win as the Tar Heels (38-10) traveled to Wilmington, N.C. and posted an 11-5 win over UNC Wilmington (27-22) Tuesday night. Senior Greg Holt went 4-for-4 with a career-high five RBI off the bench for the Tar Heels, including a grand slam in the fourth inning to break the game open.
Cody Stiles improved to 4-0 on the year for Carolina tossing seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six batters. Justin Bradley suffered the loss for UNC Wilmington dropping to 3-4 on the year.
Chaz Frank and Jesse Wierzbicki added three hits for the Tar Heels as Frank tallied three RBI in the win.
UNC Wilmington took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third with three straight hits to open the inning but Stiles escaped further damage retiring three consecutive batters to get out of the inning.
The Tar Heels answered with five runs in the fourth, four of which came on Holt's first career grand slam. Carolina tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the sixth and four more in the seventh. The Seahawks pulled within six (11-5) with three runs in the eighth to provide the final margin.
North Carolina returns to action Wednesday when it hosts UNC Asheville at 6 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
