A New Bern police officer appeared before a district court judge Thursday morning after being arrested Wednesday.

Officer Frances Sutton is accused of stealing oxycodone pills from the police evidence room. Warrants say 162 pills were taken on May 20th, 2010, December 9th, 2010, January 13th, 2012 and February 26th, 2012.

Sutton voluntarily surrendered to SBI agents Wednesday night.

She is charged with four felony counts of obstruction of justice and three felony counts of altering, destroying, or stealing evidence.

Sutton was released after posting a $35,000 secured bond.

A family member tells WITN News that the charges are false. Sutton has been a police officer since September 2003 and is on administrative leave.

Her next court date on June 14th.
