New State Unemployment Numbers Show Progress

Statewide numbers for unemployment show fewer people were out of work in March compared to February.

New data released from the state Labor and Economic Division showed in March of 2013, the statewide rate of unemployment was at 8.9%. That translated to 17,248 more people who had work.

In eastern North Carolina, Dare and Edgecombe counties had the highest rates of unemployment at 14.8% and 13.9%, respectively.

Pitt County stands at 8.6% of people unemployed, better than the 9.0% rate in February.

Onslow County had an 8.8% unemployment rate in February, and was knocked down to a 8.5% rate for the month of March.

Statewide, the report showed the counties with the highest rate of people out of work were Graham, Swain, Scotland, Dare, and Edgecombe.

Wake and Durham counties tied for the 6.9% rate of unemployment, the lowest rates for March of 2013.
