Winds shifted to the north today but it had no impact on the record breaking temperatures. Highs reached 99° in Beaufort and 98° in New Bern, which were record highs for the date. More heat is on tap for Wednesday with highs once again expected to hit the middle 90s inland. Coastal communities may see some relief from the extreme heat as winds shift to the east and providing a light onshore sea breeze. There will be lots of sunshine throughout the day. A weak cool front will push into the area Wednesday night and could produce some isolated thunderstorms.
