Irene Wipes Out 25 Percent Of Beach Nourishment Project Sand

An Outer Banks beach lost one-quarter of sand brought in as part of a multi-million dollar beach nourishment project after Hurricane Irene.

The Virginian Pilot reports the sand loss has fanned the flames for critics of the $36 million program. Others argue that losing a quarter of the sand means the nourishment program worked as planned.

Officials say rough surf has prevented them from getting a good look at how the sand really fared after Irene.
