NTSB Report: No Fuel Found In Plane That Crashed

A preliminary report says a pilot who crashed his plane two weeks ago in Bertie County apparently ran out of fuel.

Michael Taylor was critically injured in the December 16th crash in Midway, near the intersections of Highways 17 and 45.

The NTSB report says FAA inspectors found the plane's fuel selector was on the left fuel tank, which was empty. The report says there was no odor of fuel, or no fuel staining around the tank. The right tank was also empty, according to the NTSB.

The report says Taylor was flying the Piper PA-38 to his private air strip, when witnesses say they heard the engine stop running. The plane then went into a steep descent, before hitting the ground.

The NTSB says Taylor does not have a pilot certification, while a final report on the crash is not expected for several months. A FAA spokeswoman tells WITN News that they can fine someone for flying without certification, but this accident is still under investigation.

Pitt County Memorial Hospital says Taylor is now in fair condition.
