NC Redistricting Panels Take Comment On Maps

North Carolina lawmakers have heard from the first batch of citizens who wanted to give them advice about how they should draw congressional and state legislative district boundaries for the next 10 years.

The House and Senate redistricting committees held Wednesday the first in a series of public hearings in Raleigh, Rocky Mount and Roxboro. Hearings will be held across the state over the next month.

The 2010 U.S. Census figures show areas in and around Raleigh and Charlotte generally grew faster in population than the rest of the state, meaning more legislative seats are expected in Mecklenburg, Wake and surrounding counties. The districts also must comply with the federal Voting Rights Act.
