NC Police See Progress In Resuming Investigations

A once-troubled Cumberland County police department is investigating violent crimes for the first time since 2007, and the chief says he's happy with their progress.

The Fayetteville Observer reports, Spring Lake police investigated seven violent felonies between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, and all but two of the cases have been closed.

Town police officers were stripped of their felony investigation powers in 2007 after a botched child death investigation and subsequent review of the department.

Two years later, the department's remaining police powers were suspended after a State Bureau of Investigation probe.

Chief Troy McDuffie took over in 2010 and has worked to make improvements.

McDuffie says the first three months of investigating violent felonies shows the department has moved on from the past.
