Dog-Fighting 'Legend' Given Five Years In Federal Prison

A 78-year-old man Duplin County man, described as a legend in the dog-fighting world, will spend five years behind bars after being sentenced in Raleigh.

Harry Hargrove was given 60 months’ imprisonment,
the statutory maximum, followed by three years supervised release.

Hargrove pleaded guilty to the charges earlier this year, and prosecutors sought a sentence significantly longer than federal guidelines recommend.

The guidelines called for a sentence of 10 months to 16 months.

Thirty-five dogs were found on his property in April 2010 and all 35 were euthanized. A federal motion says Hargrove has been involved in dog-fighting in the South for about 40 years.

Critterlover, perhaps your cats will protect you when a "violent criminal" breaks into your home or steals something that belongs to you, harming animals is wrong, however a save the fluffys mentality vs locking up human offenders is ridiculous and it's something that someone can get more time harming an animal that a human being so thats my humanity..

My thoughts are that the term "PUNK" would have been suffice, as far as a way to describe this man. punk punk punk. He got what he got!

You people are funny, people want to put this man away for years at our expense, yet we let those on probation who are "violent" criminals roam free? I say put him on probation and be done with it. We can't convict murderers or keep violent criminals behind bars like those who kill people while out on probation, so why lock this guy up?

We lock him up because he's a sick, twisted individual who needs to pay for his crimes against creatures of God, both great and small, and for being a worthless excuse for a human being. Sounds like you could use a little humanity in you.

Just sentence him to being in a dog pen with the fighting dogs so they will fatally attack him and he will rot in hell. 40 years of dogfighting is as bad as 30-40 years of Bernie Madoff destroying investors financially out of tons of money. 40 years of dogfighting, I bet this guy was making tons of black market money. How sickening!

Let him get 5 years for every dog, and chain him up, just like the dogs. I love my pit bull and I hate the discrimination she gets due to this. Band the deed not the breed!

Wow...someone can kill their mother and possibly face 3 years, or better yet kill their daughter, and get no time and this guy might serve FIVE?! Something's not right there...

Bob, go carry your negativity elsewhere. Be HAPPY that justice is being served in this case, although it may not be served the way you see fit in others.

my only prayer is that he will be housed with someone whose only love and affection in their life came from a beloved dog and that they give true justice to this human scum.

I hope each and every day that he spends in prison is as miserable as those dogs that were tortured and maimed by him. He should be made to fight everyday that he is in prison just to survive.

Five years? Come on. I think he should get one year for every dog that he has hurt or just put him in the ring with the dogs and let them save the tax payers the money.

40 years in prison for 40 years of dogfighting, exchange a year for a year would sound about right.
