The proposal relocates the CSX Transportation rail yard out of downtown Greenville. The new yard would be south of Staton Mill Road along current tracks owned by CSX . DOT says roughly 50,0000 cars drive on or near the existing tracks in downtown Greenville every day, and freight trains can block roadways in the area for up to 36 minutes while switching train cars.
"It gives CSX a location north of Greenville where they can do all these activities, and what this project will do is actually lower the congestion in downtown Greenville that's resorting from the trains blocking the streets." said Project Engineer Ryan White.
The project will cost $6.1 million and take roughly 6-9 months to complete. The next public meeting is June 20th with the location to be announced.
