Mother Sentenced To 36 Months Probation For Throwing Baby Away

An Onslow County woman whose newborn baby was found dead in a dumpster in 2008 has been sentenced to 36 months supervised probation.

Dana Browning got probation along with 100 hours of community service. She was never charged in the death of the child, only how the body was disposed of in curbside garbage can. The baby's body was discovered by a man collecting garbage at an apartment complex in Hubert.

Previous story from November 2008:

Deputies in Onslow County have made an arrest in the case of a dead newborn found in a garbage truck last month.

Deputies have charged the mother of the child with concealing the birth of a child, and failure to report a death. 19-year-old Dana Browning is also charged with obstructing justice.

Investigators say when initially question, Browning lied to them. Eventually, deputies say they were able positively determine that Browning was the mother of the baby.

An autopsy could not determine whether the baby was born alive, deputies say, because of the decomposition of the remains.

A garbage truck driver made the gruesome discovery October 27th while emptying garbage at the Sandy Oaks apartment complex in Hubert.

Supervised probation. I don't imagine they will be supervising her chances of having oh excuse me killing more babies. I think at the least they should make her have her tubes clipped, tied and burned. Please I mean is part of her probation going to reguire a pregnancy test every month just like drug offenders not that the two are even closely related. Drug offenders only hurt themselves and the ones who do it have a choice this precious baby never had a chance

It is so sad for this baby to have been disposed of as garbage and even sadder the sentence carries little punishment. I feel the judge could have at least put her in a dumpster to serve jail time and made have her tubes ties with a big tattoo on her forehead that states "I BURIED BY DEAD BABY BY THROWING IT IN A DUMPSTER." But now she feels OK getting 36 months probation and 100 hrs of community service. When someone said we should stay in court all day and see what goes on then I must ask why? It is the judge who should do his job in prosecuting these sick individuals. If he can't handle the workload then he doesn't need to be in the seat! Sadly, there are a lot of people in our world who don't seem to value LIFE anymore.

To OSOC, please dont give me this Democrat blaming mess! Women in America have more rights than any other country there is! Not one Democrat told this woman to throw this child in the dumpster! Not one! I am so sick you you racist republicans blaming every little thing on the Dems! The truth is, is that the majority of abortions are done by republican, white females! So put a sock in it! If abortion was made illegal; so many women rights groups would be on the steps of the white house!

That it's??? She gets away with such a light sentence for throwing her baby in a trash can? Seriously, what's wrong with our judicial system?! What a flipping joke!!!!!!!

If she would have only done this a month before....it would have been an abortion and legal. This is why I don't vote democrat anymore. I am not saying there are not times that constitute an abortion, I am saying that is how cheap life is to government legislation. This is why the judge let her off so easy. Its sad, but its the law. The only hope we have now...NC has both houses with conservatives...if they cannot figure it out...we will find some that do. Bev was Ok with this sentence....does she have a soul?

I honestly can not believe our judicial system. I agree with Elizabeth people are being locked away for such things as drugs and dog fighting and this girl throws a baby in the trash and gets probation. What is this world coming to? Whether the baby was dead or not isn't the issue. What if someone dies in your home, do you put them in the dumpster to avoid funeral costs. I mean really......

If her baby had been found a few days sooner, I wonder if she'd still be getting off on such a light sentence. It takes a person with questionable conscience to go about their daily life with their newborn rotting away in a dumpster. The sad part is, she'll probably breed again before her probation is up. With so many people wanting kids that can't have them out there, it's sad that some that can treat life with such little regard. Sad.

That's it! That's all she got for throwing away her child? That is what's wrong with the judicial system these days. Get almost 2 years for dog fighting but probation for something as horrible as this. Its a shame! Personally I would have given her LIFE in a dumpster!
