Morehead City Marks Nursing Home Week

As national "Nursing Home" week comes to a close one local nursing home made it extra special for its staff and residents.

Community leaders came out to speak to residents at the Harborview Towers in Morehead City Friday.

Mayor Pro Tem Dennis Thomas, a representative from Governor Bev Perdue's office, and Major Richard Abell with the Morehead City Police Department spoke on the importance of the city and nursing home's relationship.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard and trumpeters from the East Carteret High School band were on hand to raise a flag that was dedicated to former Morehead City Police Chief and WWII veteran William Condie, who is also a resident at the nursing home.

Jennifer is soooo right. Stop having your own pity parties and go help out people that need a friend- some are totally alone. It'll do you good too!!!

Thanks Jennifer! Having watched my parents and other family members spend time in nursing homes, what you say is soooo true. One employee said some people drop off their relatives and never come back- sad. Quit having pity parties for yourself and go see how you can help others and yourself at the same time. Then, throw out your antidepressent medications.

Community, Churches, Family, Friends, Civic minded groups or someone looking for something kind to do. Feel free to speak to an Activity Director at ANY nursing home/Assisted Living in your area on how you can help, entertain, or become a friend to someone who has no family or friends that visit. Maybe if you garden or know a special craft you can share or just sit and talk awhile. Need no talent for that! Just a heart and a little time. Sponser a Bingo, a party or whatever! Just GO! You will be blessed and so will they. Former Activity Director, Jennifer Cain
