NEW INFO: Mom, Baby Okay After Truck Flips

A mother and her baby escaped injuries after their pickup truck flipped over after a crash this morning in Craven County.

State troopers charged Heather Robertson of Vanceboro with reckless driving after the crash on Macedonia Church Road around 9:20 a.m.

Witnesses say the mother got distracted and the truck went off the road, through a ditch and then flipped over. The crash took out two mailboxes which were just replaced a couple of months ago after another accident.

A neighbor heard the crash and used a brick to break out the truck's rear window so they could get the baby out first, then the mom.

The 26-year-old woman told the trooper that she was tending to her one year old when she ran off the right shoulder of the road and lost control.

She isn't the only driver that doesn't pay attention. You have to be on your guard for drivers like her. There are also drivers that get distracted with their cell phones, etc. If you can't give your driving your undivided attention, you need to pull over safely and tend to your business.

To Tarzan, "set your cruise control b4 you turn around in your seat" .... really? i've never thought it was a good idea to be driving and then turn around in your seat.... maybe that's why this lady wrecked, whether the cruise control was set or not doesn't matter. Glad she and baby are ok.

Everyone knows you are supposed to set the cruise control before you turn around in your seat.

That is a back road with the posted 45mph, but it is usually better to drive slower with all the curves. This road is like a quiet suburb street, so no excuse for this to happen.

One might surmise that it is best to pull safely on to the shoulder of the road before tending to the baby, or anything else. That hapless woman would have had a lifetime of pain if the crash had severely injured or killed her baby.
