Mercer-Mitchell Matchup In Greenville

Two current Greenville councilmen are vying for re-election, but one of them is leaving his district seat to run against the current at-large councilman.

District Four Councilman Calvin Mercer has his sights on a fourth term on the city council but in the at-large position.

Right now Dennis Mitchell is the incumbent and also running to retain his seat.

It's been a contentious race for the two.

We spoke to them about their platforms to move the city forward.

Mitchell says before being elected in 2011, he sat on Greenville's redevelopment board that approved new development in the city. Mitchell says, "I want to continue with what I started when I got elected two years ago which is economic development. I think jobs and growth are the keys to quality of life and the keys to reducing crime or the keys to the overall health of our city."

Mercer says he's also in favor of growth, but in a different way. Mercer says, " Definitely want to continue our good work on economic development that has been happening for several years. We want to continue that in an open transparent responsive way. That's what citizens are concerned about."
