Maysville Seeks Tax To Fund Public Safety Officer

The town of Maysville in Jones County is asking local residents to help hire a full time public safety officer.

The town has a volunteer fire department, but the town manager says they could really use a full time person to go out on emergency calls.

The town is asking its residents to sign a petition for a 3 cent tax hike to pay $39,000 for the position which would be a firefighter, EMT & community police officer all in one. The average homeowner would pay $16.00 a year for the position.

Town Manager Jonathan Franklin says they need 35 percent of homeowners to sign the petition to get the fire tax on the ballot.

A town meeting is set for Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. to discuss it.
