Martin County Manager Gets $30,000 Raise

Another county manager here in Eastern Carolina is getting a big pay raise.

Martin County Manager Russell Overman's salary is receiving a $30,000 a year boost. His new salary will be $113,913, up from $83,913.

County Commissioners Chairman Butch Lilley says they had heard Overman was interviewing at other places, and they didn't want to lose him.

Overman has been county manager for six years, and Lilley says he was hired at the bottom of the salary range. He said in several of those years Overman received no pay raise. "He's an outstanding manager for Martin County and has genuine concerns and a great attitude for serving the needs of Martin County citizens," Lilley told WITN.

Overman's pay raise was unanimous.

Earlier this year Bertie County Manager Zee Lamb's salary jumped from $102,000 in 2010 to around $144,000 in 2011, which drew protests at county commissioner meetings.

Yes, it did matter. The commissioners have placed employees' salaries (except for a couple) at the bottom of their priorities come budget time for far too long. They lag behind compared to like positions elsewhere. Small across-the-board raises (if any) meted out year after fosters mediocrity and turnover. No one wants to put in the time and effort to establish a true merit-based pay plan that rewards real measureable performance for those who go above and beyond, while assuring that those content to "make 8" are paid accordingly.

Congratulations Russell Overman, say goodbye to the Martin County crazies who made their hateful and loser comments here. We will miss you.

If a guy can't make ends meet at $83k/year, bumping him up to $113k/year won't help for very long and is only costing the taxpayers unnecessarily. There are honest folks out here getting by on $20k/year; sure, we don't have a lot of big expensive toys, and job security isn't what it was 15-20 years ago, but we make it work. Now I'm not saying everyone should be capped at that, but government officials should be capped at $50k/year or so. They're not fixing the economy [fast enough], they're just doing their job and riding the gravy train, writing their own paychecks as high as they think they can get away with. If they were talented, they'd be marketing their skills as doctors, lawyers or some such in the private sector. Tell me what classes I need to take, and I will do that job for $50k/year.

when our county manager Ellis Williford wants a big raise he and the county commission chair or vice chair just have open meetings laws violations and secretively and very low keyed just sneak him big raises in budget amendments in county fiances without any6one knowing unless it gets caught. he makes over 165 thousand per year , ranking him among the hgihest paid county managers in a relatively small county. the former 7 term ousted corrupt sheriff was the 3rd highest paid sheriff in the state.the citizens of Wilson county have absolutely no trust and confidence in county and city government in Wilson and Wilson county. partisan democratic poltical patronage, cronyism and corruption is the rule of the day.

Well if the county is so concerned with the commissioners and county business why did the vote the most qualified commissioner out of office(Mort Hurst) for some farmer from Oak City? That is the real problem in this county. Voting people into office that don't have clue what is going on.

have an illegal dumping ground near my home (some hazardous to environment/health) and this was reported to MC (Mr. Overman) also to EPA some time ago and nothing was done about it. I was told by Mr. Overman that there are no zoning laws in MC. WHAT???? Why do we have a zoning department. Moral of my story is that this county is not ran like it should be and is so poor and with very few business that it should not be very difficult to run a county of this size with so little to run. Heck I was told we don't even have zoning laws. Funny to me I saw some men with MC zoning department polos on one day out at lunch. Might be a good place to start cutting the budget there if we don't have zoning laws don't need zoning employees.

Born in Martin Co. and returned to Martin Co. thinking things had improved. Instead we have closed minded Commissioners and County Manager, thinking only of themselves. They don't like changes or new businesses to increase revenue, because they will lose control of the County and will not be able to control. They are selfish and want nothing to benefit the county,if they don't get to benefit from the revenues. They showed their dumbheads when they decided to put every county office in one place, courthouse, DMV,Probation, Sheriff,DSS, tax offices and whatever else is in that one building. They did not even consider the parking space for the elderly or handicap people in making their decision. So what are they doing for the Martin Co. citizens or their employees? Is this being considerate to the citizens and employees? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! So Why the BIG RASIE?
