The delivery of a baby at home became a very special one for a mother in Martin County when her own grandmother was the one to help bring the baby into this world.
Shirley Simpson is in her 70's. She retired from the healthcare profession more than 20 years ago, and had only delivered one child in her entire life until earlier this week.
Simpson's 26-year-old granddaughter Shalisa, was 36 weeks along when she started having labor pains. She traveled 30 miles from her Roper home to Martin General Hospital in Williamston. She says nurses told her to wait it out, but little did they know that within 5 hours, she would be delivering her 3rd child on her grandmother's couch.
"I said I'm not going to call the ambulance until the water breaks. Heck, what did I know, you know. I never seen a baby born that quickly," said Shalisa.
Ke' marion, made his debut into the world at just 5 pounds and 13 ounces. Both mother and child are healthy and doing well.
