Marines Back Home After Year In Afghanistan

There were tears of joy at Camp Lejeune Thursday morning as 100 Marines and Sailors returned from a year long deployment in Afghanistan.

While deployed these Marines served in both the Helmand and Nimroz Provinces- and the day they left was the day we heard of a U.S. Army Soldier firing into homes off base killing 16 Afghan civilians.

We asked those Marines who returned home if that news jolted forces on the front lines. Lieutenant Colonel Neil Murphy told us, "I think everybody that's working towards a better solution knows there will be incidents and things that will happen from time to time that will test our resolve, and we've seen it on both sides."

Major General John Toolane has been in charge of all U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. He says, "Unfortunately, sometimes what we see in the news makes it look worse than it is. But I just left there, and I can tell you I didn't have to deal with any violence in Helmand Province because of the Quaran burning or the shooting."

The Major General says a lot of that is thanks to Afghan officials themselves. He says, "They've convinced folks, hey this is just a mistake. There's no need to turn out against the coalition forces."

So far a good report from the front lines- hand delivered by the Marines who are welcomed home.
