Marine From New Bern Awarded Purple Heart

A Marine from New Bern has been awarded the Purple Heart Medal in Afghanistan after he was hit by an IED.

Cpl. Bryan Brown is a 20-year-old Marine who is based at Camp Pendleton in California but is currently deployed to Afghanistan. The Marine Corps released information stating Brown was hit by an IED on September 5. Cpl. Brown is a heavy equipment operator for the Marine Corps, a role which he describes driving large vehicles, such as tractors.
He also helps build patrol bases in Helmand province.

Cpl. Brown was part of the New Bern High School Football Team that won the state championship in 2007.

Cpl. Brown is carrying on a family tradition of military service. He says his mother was in the Army, his father was in the Marine Corps, and his grandfather was in the Navy.
