300+ Treated For Heat Related Illnesses At ECU Game

Greenville Fire officials say around 300 to 350 people had to be treated for heat related illnesses at the ECU game Saturday afternoon.

Greenville Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Paul Ahearn says 50 of those people were transported to Vidant Medical Center. He says a couple of people were hospitalized because of heart attacks or seizures.

Ahearn believes the humidity, along with people drinking alcohol and being dehydrated contributed to some of the heat exhaustion.

He says usually EMS crews set up 6 medical stations, but today they had to set up 16 to 18.

WITN Meteorologist Greg Armbrecht says, "During the game the air temperature was around 90 degrees, but the heat index was between 98 to 103. Between the heat, humidity and sun, it doesn't take long to take it's toll on the body without proper hydration."
