An arrest has been made in the double homicide investigation in Wilson County. A sheriff's office spokeswoman says the suspect was arrested Tuesday night.

At a news conference this afternoon, Sheriff Calvin Woodard, Jr. said Verna Lee Farmer has been charged with two counts of first degree murder.

The Wilson County Sheriff's Office says 61-year-old John Little and 42-year-old Charlene Jones were found dead Monday in Little's house.

Deputies say Jones' family called 911 Monday after the woman hadn't been seen in several days. Woodard says there were signs of a struggle. Through interviews they learned Farmer was involved, and that the suspect and Jones at one time had a strong friendship.

The sheriff said Farmer made investigators aware that he was involved in the double homicide. He said they are still awaiting to hear from the Medical Examiner's Office on a time of death, but he believes it is one or two days, based on the last time the woman talked to her family.

Woodard says the murder weapon, a gun, was found in a semi-open area within two miles of the crime scene.

The 45-year-old Farmer has a criminal record dating back to 1990. He was last given probation for a 2000 drug conviction. Other convictions include assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and drunk driving.

Farmer has already been before a judge and is being held with no bond. Last year Wilson County only had one homicide.

Spell the Sheriff's name right. It's Woodard not Woodward. Great job to the WCSO! Prayers for the victims and their families.

You would think our simple minded judges would know by now that people like this man does not belong in our society and should be put away for good. I guess that if the crime does not effect them or their family's then it does not matter. Judges are running for office soon so vote out the bleeding hearts.

I agree with Anonymous...this is the best site for up to the minute news. In fact, WITN is our homepage. We can get news and weather on one page. But news can be written correctly just as fast as when you write it poorly. And I have no intention of moving to a different site, just encouraging WITN to be better.

The "press conference" is worthless unless they are going to tell us there will be a public hanging immediately following the very quick two week trial. Thugs ain't scared no more of our LAME USELESS GOOD-FOR-NOTHING "justice" system.

this is the "newsiest" website for up to the minute news coverage of what is going on in the area. thank you witn. i go to your site FIRST if I want to be in the know.... when you're the one to get breaking news out first, every now and then you'll have a few grammar errors or poorly written headline, but I'd rather have that than to have to wait until way after something isn't news anymore to have a perfectly written article. if others only wish to criticize, maybe they should go elsewhere.. just saying.

For Anonymous Too: This is a professional site operated by people who are supposed to be professionals. The headlines and text should be written properly, even when hastily written...some of them are terrible.

I agree. I'm not an English major, but it does seems like the quality of writing on this website does leave a little to be desired. Then again, if you're working in this market you're probably not getting paid much.
