A Pitt county man hot-wired a bus, stole gas, then led officers on a chase according to Highway Patrol.
Sgt. Sales says it happened Friday evening. Sales say 33-year-old Michael Wilkerson of Winterville stole a full-sized bus from a church located on Memorial Dr.
Sales says soon after a citizen called in and told officials Wilkerson stole gas from a gas station near Ayden. That citizen was following Wilkerson.
Officers caught up with Wilkerson on NC 118 near Grifton and attempted to stop him. Wilkerson would not stop and went into Craven county. Officers then gave chase going up to speeds of 35 to 40 mph.
Officers put out stop sticks. Several of the buses tires were flattened, but Wilkerson kept on driving.
Then near Ange Road and River road the bus sideswiped a Pitt county deputy car. Wilkerson lost control of the bus and went off the road.
Sales says Wilkerson attempted to exit the bus but when he did his head went through a window causing a severe laceration. Wilkerson was transported to PCMH.
Sales says Wilkerson was heavily intoxicated at the time.
Wilkerson is now in jail under a $25,000 dollar bond. He has been charged with felony speeding to elude arrest, driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, reckless driving, assault on a government official, larceny of vehicle, and larceny of fuel.
