Man Admits Stealing Tax Records, Then Cashing Refunds

A New Bern man has admitted to stealing hundreds of files at a local tax preparer and then using that information to steal their pending tax refunds.

Jeffrey Toohey pleaded guilty Tuesday before a federal judge in Raleigh to a scheme which netted him some $400,000.

The feds say the 42-year-old Toohey pulled off the scheme between December 2009 and July of last year. They say in October 2010 Toohey broke into the New Bern Jackson Hewitt tax office, stealing over 300 files with personal information of tax clients. The man then established Yahoo and Gmail email accounts for the people and directed tax refunds to either debit cards which were mailed to addresses he knew were vacant or to bank accounts he opened.

Toohey has yet to be sentenced in the identity theft scheme.

Toohey is no stranger to being in the trouble with the law, Several years ago he was convicted of raping a woman in the parking lot of the Pentagon while serving in the Marine Corps.
