Man Accused Of Killing Sister, Wounding Mom Won't Stand Trial

A judge says a man who is accused of killing his sister and wounding his mother is not competent to stand trial.

Dennis Connolley, Jr. has been in jail ever since the 2007 shooting at Country Side Mobile Home Park in Onslow County.

After a competency hearing that began Monday and concluded Tuesday afternoon, Superior Judge Gary Trawick found Connolley not guilty by reason of insanity.

Defense experts testified that Connolley was not trying to hurt his sister or mother, but was trying to protect them from what he thought was condemnation he brought to the family by stealing at work and having a sexual relationship out of wedlock.

District Attorney Ernie Lee says Connolley will be sent to Butner State Hospital for treatment and could spend the rest of his life at the facility.
