A Lenoir County man is dead after his mobile home caught fire early Saturday morning
North Lenoir Volunteer Firefighters were called to the scene on Ham Street around 4:40 a.m.
Officials say they found 74-year-old Richard Fields dead near the kitchen area of the home.
Fields' wife told officials that he came into the bedroom and told her to get out of the home and call 911. The wife reported that the mobile home was filled with smoke. She went out the front door and thought that her husband was behind her, but Fields never left the home. It's not known at this time why he did not leave, but there was a small dog in the home and officials say he may have been trying to find it.
The NCSBI as well as the Lenoir County Fire Marshal are attempting to determine the cause of the fire.
Officials say the fire apparently began near the water heater and fuse panel. There had been a history of electrical problems within the mobile home. Officials say the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
